5 out of 5 stars My favorite bike rack.   October 27, 2008

Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R2LGTUHJANS485 I've owned and used many different style bike racks in the past. I highly, highly recommend this bike rack!

PROS:
+folds up quickly and can compactly stay mounted behind your car
+extremely sturdy (weighs 33 lbs)
+almost zero sway (includes threaded pin)
+bikes don't move at all when driving at high speeds
+very adjustable
+sufficient clearance that bikes don't scrape car
+very affordable

CONS:
-maybe don't pinch your fingers..? :-)
-this 1.25" model can only hold 2 bikes -- no adapters to upgrade to 4 bikes.
-given enough time a bike thief could disassemble this rack using wrenches. Locks would slow them down (see below) but not eliminate risk.

I'm using this on a 2003 Honda Accord with a 1.25" Draw-Tite hitch receiver that I bought from [...]. (Draw-Tite, Hidden Hitch and Reese are all made by the same parent company!)

FYI- I believe Amazon has the wrong manufacturer part number (MFG P/N) listed for this item as of October 2008. The Swagman bike rack that Amazon is selling here is actually MFG P/N 64625... it only fits on a 1.25" hitch receiver. I just bought it, so I'm sure. It's not to be confused with MFG P/N 64670 (newer model that fits BOTH 1.25" and 2" hitch receivers but has different design and weighs about 34 lbs) or MFG P/N 64650 (fits 2" hitch receivers only).

Again, this bike rack is the model that ONLY work on 1.25" hitch receivers.

UPDATE February 2009: As far as security goes...
(1) Swagman makes a 1/2" diameter threaded hitch receiver lock (MFG P/N 64029) that will lock this bike rack to your hitch.
(2) You will also want to purchase 2 regular padlocks to lock your bikes to the bike rack -- your local hardware store will have these.
(3) You will probably also want to purchase a 1/2" diameter NON-threaded hitch receiver lock for this bike rack -- you can't tell from the Amazon picture, but there is a 2nd quick release bolt at the bottom of the rack that could allow bike thieves quick access. I purchased Master Lock Receiver Hitch Lock 1/2" (MFG P/N 1472DAT "Barbell Series") for about $15 at my local hitch store. Note that this is in addition to the item I mentioned in #1 above. The newer Swagman model (64670) has a different design and probably won't need this.

5 out of 5 stars Bike Rack Exceeds Expectations.   September 7, 2005

This rack is advertized as easy to put together out of the box, and easy to use once you are ready to to ride. Both of these statements are completely true. We have one man's and one woman's comfort bikes and the different length center main clamps of the rack are perfectly suited to these differences in bike design. The rack is very easy to insert and lock into our trailer hitch and the bikes are extremely easy to load requiring only a minimal lift and support to set and lock them into the rack. Definitely truth in advertising!

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Value and Features   November 22, 2005

Bought on Amazon. Best price anywhere by far. Goes together in a snap and what I really like is how it folds up for easy storage. I can take it off the hitch and stow it in the vehicle when I am off riding. I like the way it supports the bike from below as opposed to having bikes hanging by their frames. Well thought out design, and even the locking (clevis pins) are attached by a small cable to keep from loosing them. Swagman sells an extension to add two more bikes if you need it. I only carry one bike, and have room to carry a second if someone wants to join me on a ride. I highly recommend this carrier.

5 out of 5 stars Great bike rack - skip the overpriced yuppie racks   April 30, 2007

I just bought this bike for a bike trip I took with a friend of mine. I drive a Toyota 4runner, 4wd, with a two inch hitch receiver. I was nervous about buying a bike rack online, but the price made me take the chance.

When I got the rack and opened it up, I was immediately impressed by the welded, heavy metal construction of the rack. However, the instruction manual had me nervous: it said the rack should be used on paved or gravel roads only. Well, I was going to be driving through some pretty hairy 4-wheel drive situations and needed something with stability. I decided to go for it anyway, hooked up the rack, and was on my way.

After 3 days of two-track, dirt track, steep inclines and muddy sliding, the bike rack is in perfect condition. My bikes were protected, secure and safe. Loading and unloading was a breeze. For $129 you could not do better. I'm willing to bet you couldn't do better with the other $300 - $500 models out there anyway.

Now, a little bit about why this Swagman model is better than the $99 Allen version. The SWAGMAN you see here is equipped with a bottom carrier. In case you hadn't noticed, the bottom carrier attaches to the wheels and wheels on bikes are ALWAYS ROUND. Crazy, I know. The Allen version (with the top straps) is common amongst bike carriers (trunk mounted and hitch alike). These bikes wrap around the top frame of the bike. Here is the rub: NOT ALL BIKE FRAMES ARE THE SAME. I have a V-frame bike and those straps do not wrap around. Other bike frames are very narrow; some are very thick - the point being that those straps are not going to work for every bike. The SWAGMAN does. Its wheel base supports are adjustable. The locking center clasp simply applies pressure to the center of the frame. It can't go wrong.

In conclusion, save yourself a lot of money and buy the SWAGMAN version here. Save yourself a headache and opt for the bottom, wheel attachment carriers over the other varieties. For an extra $30 over the Allen, you'll be riding pretty - guaranteed.

**Oh yea, plus it's sold through Amazon so the shipping is free.

5 out of 5 stars Easiest, most versatile rack I've found   July 23, 2006

Mounting any bike is easy since the rack holds the WHEELS instead of the frame. Will hold big bikes, small bikes, ladies bikes and even holds my Giant Revive with no top frame tube at all. Smart product.
